City centre roads to close for Bristol-based regiment's Freedom Parade this weekend

Road closures will be in place this weekend for a 'Freedom of the City' parade taking place in Bristol city centre.

Several roads will be shut between 9.30am and midday on Saturday (February 22) as the 39 Signal Regiment marches through the city.

Baldwin Street, College Green, Colston Avenue, Colston Street, and Park Street are all likely to be affected by the parade, which will be attended by up to 200 soldiers from the Horfield-based reserve regiment.

This is a milestone year for the regiment as the Royal Corps of Signals celebrates its centenary.

The Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Jos Clark said: “After granting Freedom of the City, I am very proud to continue the celebration along with this wonderful regiment’s centenary.

"The Signals have such strong heritage here in Bristol through the Royal Signals Units and the North Somerset Yeomanry before that.

"I look forward very much to witnessing their display.”

Commanding Officer 39 Signal Regiment Lieutenant, Colonel Vincent Connelly Phd TD, said: “It is a great honour and privilege for the 39 Signal Regiment to exercise the Freedom of the City of Bristol in recognition of our strong local links and in commemoration of the centenary of the Royal Signals.

“39 Signal Regiment has long lineage with Bristol through our predecessor Royal Signals Units based here in the Second World War and very much further back with the North Somerset Yeomanry.

"We are exercising this honour for the present generation of Signallers and their families who support us so well and for all who have served in the Royal Signals locally and helped maintain our proud links with the city

“As an Army Reserve regiment we have people from all walks of life who live and work within Bristol (as well as from Gloucester, Bath, Cardiff and Windsor) in their day-to-day civilian roles, but who soldier with us on a part time basis."
