City centre road shut after gales blow panels from building 200ft through the air

An emergency road closure is in place after high winds blew solar panels from the roof of a newly finished building, dumping some of them 60 metres away.

Winds from Storm Ciara blew 13 of the newly fitted panels from the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, with one of them found on the roof of the nearby Royal Liverpool Hospital.

Liverpool Council confirmed that the closure of Crown Street at the junction with Pembroke Place and West Derby Street is likely to remain in place until at least Thursday morning.

That is to allow builder Laing O'Rourke to carry out work to fully secure the remaining 60 solar panels on the roof of the building.

A tweet from Liverpool Council advised those trying to get to the Royal who would normally use Crown Street should use Prescot Street to access the hospital instead.

The tweet said: "Due to wind damage to the new Clatterbridge Cancer Hospital,  @CCCNHS, there's an emergency  #roadclosure in place on Crown St (A5048) at Pembroke Place & West Derby St. To get to the Royal,  @LivHospitals , please remain on Grove St/Low Hill & use Prescot St.  #StormCiara"

A council spokesman said Laing O'Rourke, which is building the new Clatterbridge Centre, was monitoring the situation at the building 24/7.

Workers will set up scaffolding to allow full access to the roof before netting the remaining solar panels but this work relies on the weather not deteriorating to badly.

Gales, rain and huge waves caused disruption as Storm Ciara hit Merseyside and the rest of the UK.

Train and ferry cancellations affected much of our region while elsewhere in the UK suffered from flooding and major disruption.

A 58-year-old man from Hampshire became the first victim of the storm when he died after his car was hit by a falling tree.
