City centre restaurant Benihana announces shock closure

City centre restaurant Benihana has shut down, the restaurant chain has confirmed.

The Japanese eatery opened up on West Nile Street earlier this year.

However, today it was confirmed the branch has been closed due to 'financial' reasons.

A Benihana spokesperson told Glasgow Live: "Benihana will cease trading from its W Nile Street restaurant in Glasgow on Saturday 7th September. Against a backdrop of the well-publicised struggles being faced by the restaurant sector, and the depression affecting the UK high street, the difficult decision to close on financial viability grounds has been taken.

"We take this opportunity to thank our staff for their continued dedication and customers who have welcomed us with open arms. It has been a pleasure to serve you and to be part of the local community.

"Moving forward, we will continue to focus on Benihana’s franchise programme in the UK and internationally, together with our long-standing Piccadilly and Chelsea restaurants in London. Benihana’s portfolio includes 20 restaurants around the world [excluding the US & Caribbean] and we look forward to welcoming Mexico City and Cairo, Egypt to our family later this year."
