Psion joins radio bidding
Psion, the technology group, and programme producer UBC Media yesterday joined the MXR consortium bidding for five regional digital radio licences. The presence of Psion among the consortium partners will enable the development of data services to be broadcast alongside the planned clutch of radio stations. MXR includes radio groups Chrysalis, Capital and Jazz FM as well as Guardian Media Group, publisher of the Guardian newspaper.
Scottish Life closes doors
The Scottish Life mutual company, expected to be sold this week to GE Capital, yesterday closed the door on carpetbaggers taking out last-minute with-profits policies to try to make money from a sale. Creditor seeks savers US credit card issuer Capital One yesterday launched an assault on the British savings market, offering three products including a direct access account paying between 3% and 5.5% gross. Capital One, which entered the British credit card market in 1996 now has more than 1m UK cardholders.
Tin mine in new ownership
The first moves to reopen Britain's last working tin mine were announced yesterday, 29 months after it closed with the loss of 300 jobs. Contracts for the purchase of the 800m-deep South Crofty pit, near Camborne, west Cornwall, have been exchanged in a deal which would give Redruth-based Baseresult the relevant mineral rights, and the processing plant.
Belgo goes for posh pizza
Restaurant company Belgo believes there is scope to open 50 of its Strada upmarket pizzerias across Britain, to cater for a gap in the market between "Pizza Express and top-end Italian eateries".
Belgo's annual pre-tax profits increased 33% to £4.06m.
