Citizen's arrest for man who allegedly rammed cars in Canberra

A man accused of a dramatic car ramming incident in a Wanniassa car park in Canberra is behind bars, after being caught and restrained by friends of the man whose car he had allegedly stolen.

Anthony Batcheldor, 26, is facing four charges including assault and driving a stolen car.

Court documents reveal the van was allegedly taken when it was left running in a suburban driveway early Thursday morning.

That afternoon a friend of the van's owner saw it moving slowly through the car park at the Wanniassa shops, and put his own van nose to nose with the vehicle so it could not be driven away.

It is alleged Batcheldor reversed at high speed into other cars.

The court documents show the van owner's friend, his two sons and another man then took on Batcheldor, taking the keys.

They ended up in a physical altercation where they restrained him on the ground until police arrived.

Batcheldor made a brief appearance in the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday and applied for bail.

His lawyer told the court he had been hurt in the incident after being attacked by the men and had been in hospital most of the night.

He said he had somewhere to stay and would comply with strict conditions.

But Magistrate Bernadette Boss refused bail saying she had no confidence he would comply with any court orders.

Two women who were in the van with Batcheldor have also been charged.

The case will be back in court next month.
