Citizen journalism: the good, the bad and the ugly

In a tour d'horizon of the nouvelle vague of citizen journalism, a Los Angeles Times article suggests that the results are mixed. Hardly a surprise. It points to examples of enthusiasm, promise and atrocious spelling errors in sites "largely written by unpaid, untrained and unedited citizen reporters, who say they 'commit acts of journalism' more for kicks than out of a sense of civic calling."

Most thoughtful quote is from media professor Phil Meyer: "What you're seeing is a radical new way of doing journalism. We're back to the time of the lonely pamphleteer or the tramp printers in the Europe. Just as lonely pamphleteers organised into newspapers, all of this will be organised into some kind of structure." (Via Los Angeles Times)
