Cineworld to reopen cinemas in May as Scotland's lockdown restrictions are eased

Film-lovers, this news is for you - Cineworld has revealed plans to reopen cinema screens in the UK in May.

The news comes seven months after the film giant was forced to shut 660 branches worldwide due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The company reported a £1.3billion loss in the first six months of 2020 as the Covid crisis took hold of the high street.

However, Cineworld has now announced that it is monitoring the UK's roadmap "closely", with plans to reopen UK outlets later this spring and welcome film fans back to their venues.

The company said it has also reached a multi-year agreement with Warner Bros - giving it 31 days' exclusivity over films before new releases are shared with premium video on demand streaming services.

Cinemas, theatres amusement arcades and bingo halls are allowed to reopen in Scotland from May 17.

Mooky Greidinger, chief executive officer of Cineworld, said: "With the health and safety of our customers, staff, and communities as our top priority, we continue to take all the necessary precautions and abide by our CinemaSafe guidelines to confidently provide a safe and comfortable experience.

"We will also be monitoring developments closely in the U.K. and across Europe as we set to gradually reopen across the world in line with local government guidance."

Cineworld is world's second-largest cinema chain, with 790 branches across 10 countries including Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, United Kingdom and the United States.
