Cineworld to 'close all of its UK and Ireland cinemas' with 5500 jobs at risk after James Bond film delay

Cineworld is set to close its UK and Ireland sites in the coming weeks, it has been reported.

The Sunday Times reports the cinema giant is writing to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden to say the industry is now "unviable".

The sector has been hit by the delays of blockbuster films such as the next James Bond movie No Time To Die.

The launch of the 007 film has been postponed twice and its release date has now been pushed back to April 2021.

Cineworld has four cinemas in Glasgow: Renfrew Street – the world's tallest cinema – and outlets at Silverburn, iMax at the Science Centre and the Parkhead Forge.

It comes after the firm last month reported a $1.6bn (£1.3bn) loss for the six months up to June due to lockdown.

The shuttering of its UK outlets would affect 128 cinemas and put up to 5500 jobs at risk.

Cineworld has been contacted for comment.
