Cineworld expecting to reopen Scottish cinemas from May as lockdown eases

Cineworld is hoping to reopen cinemas in Scotland from May amid lockdown easing.

The film theatre chain shut its doors to Scots back in October after a number of big blockbuster released were delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Scotland's recent stay at home lockdown prolonged the temporary closure further as cinema screens have remained off limits during the opening months of 2021.

But the Scottish Government’s timetable out of lockdown has scheduled the potential reopening of cinemas to take place from May 17.

Cineworld has told the Daily Record that it is seeking to reopen all of its branches in Scotland from that date.

A spokesperson for the firm said: “Cineworld expects to resume operations in the UK in May, in line with current government guidance.”

The film and cinema industry has been one of the most impacted since the coronavirus pandemic emerged across the globe last year.

Cineworld announced that it would temporarily close all 660 of its cinemas worldwide in October - which affected around 45,000 staff working for the firm.

Bosses at the cinema chain cited delays to the new James Bond film as part of its decision to close at the time.

Several other films have been delayed or released on at-home streaming platforms during the pandemic.

The latest 007 movie was originally scheduled for release at UK cinemas in late 2019, but has been delayed on a number of occasions.

Daniel Craig’s final outing as Bond is expected to be finally shown at cinemas in September this year.
