Cinematic Orchestra at Sage Gateshead impress our reviewer

The Cinematic Orchestra will sound familiar to many people - even those who don't know the band by their very apt name - as their compositions regularly feature on soundtracks. However, the collective are much more than movie music writers.

The Cinematic Orchestra's unique fusion of jazz, electronic and classical was thrilling to hear and see played live in such an appropriate setting as the Sage on Wednesday night.

The collective's live show takes you up, down and back again, with all the purpose of a skilled director. Last night, Cinematic played with guitar, bass, percussion, keyboard, saxophone, two vocalists and various electronic devices.

Opener Lessons' soft synth intro and percussion build-up was matched by an impressive, yet not ostentatious lightshow, which worked well throughout.

'A Promise' featured stunning vocals from Heidi Vogel, who was faultless in her execution. Cinematic Orchestra's latest studio album, To Believe, was released earlier this month.

Guitarist Grey Reverend's playing on To Believe track Zero One/The Fantasy... was - aside from the crescendo-building A Promise - the highlight for me. It's very much welcome to have Cinematic Orchestra back. They have been missed.
