Cinemas may reopen in August as size of public gatherings to increase

Cinemas may reopen in August as larger groups of people are being allowed to gather together.

In the case that the virus continues to stay at bay, smaller public events may be allowed to happen outdoors, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said.

He said: "What we've said is there will be no mass gatherings until the 31st of August at the earliest.

"But if the virus stays suppressed, we could see some smaller outdoor or mass gatherings in September...maybe outdoor cultural events of a few thousand people - maybe 3,000 or 4,000 or 5,000, but unlikely to be more than that."

Varadkar said cinemas may reopen as early as August and "operate at a profit" while still abiding by social distancing rules.

But he said larger events such as live concerts, performances and theatres are difficult as keeping people 2m apart is tough at those events.

He added: "So that’s going to be trickier but if it is safe to do so, I will do it."

A €25 million package for arts and culture in Ireland had been confirmed recently.

€20m will be given to the Arts Council which will raise it's funding for 2020 to €100m.

The other €5m will be made available to invest in future cultural and museum spaces, digital and online art and performances.

Varadkar said: "Over the last few months we have had many days of sorrow and suffering.

"In times like this we see the true value of culture to society - the books, the films, the songs, the plays - all the different forms of culture that entertain as well as enlighten

"The pandemic hasn’t been easy for our artists and cultural institutions, and I know their livelihoods have been hit hard. So many events have been cancelled, so many places have been forced to close."

Varadkar said the government wishes to recognise the importance of culture in Irish society.
