Cinemas in Glasgow close in response to coronavirus outbreak

A number of cinemas in Glasgow have now closed in response to the coronavirus outbreak.

This afternoon, Glasgow Film Theatre announced they are shutting with a planned reopening date of April 17, while Cineworld also confirmed the closure of all their UK-wide cinemas, starting from Wednesday.

Odeon announced yesterday they will shut cinemas amid the pandemic.

Boris Johnson has called on people to stay away from pubs, clubs and theatres and to avoid all non-essential contacts and travel.

The GFT took to Twitter to say: "Glasgow Film Theatre (GFT) is now closed due to nationwide precautions around public health. We plan to re-open on 17 April, subject to the situation at that time.

"Tickets purchased online for shows till 16 April will be automatically refunded today. For tickets purchased at the Box Office, refunds will be available to customers when we re-open.

"You can continue to support GFT by making a donation at http://glasgowfilm.org/iframe-donation."

An Odeon spokesperson commented: "In line with the latest government guidance on Covid-19, we are temporarily closing our cinemas.

Cineworld Group chief executive Mooky Greidinger said: "At Cineworld and Picturehouse we are committed to providing safe and healthy environments for our employees and guests and have therefore made the difficult decision to close our cinemas in UK and Ireland until further notice.

"We deeply value our cinema-loving customers and have no doubt we will be serving everyone again as soon as possible with a full slate of Hollywood blockbusters and the best of independent films and content."

"We will continue to monitor the situation and look forward to welcoming back guests as soon possible."
