A selection of 10 Italian movies will be screened at the 5th Italian Film Festival Bangkok, which kicks off this Thursday and runs until May 26.
Organised by the Italian Embassy in collaboration with the Dante Alighieri Cultural Association, the festival presents a selection of recent original high-quality productions to mark the second week of Italian Cinema in the World (or Fare Cinema 2019), the annual venture held to promote quality Italian film production abroad.
The opening ceremony will take place at Scala Theatre, the last remaining operational standalone single-screen cinema in Thailand, on Thursday at 6pm. It will be followed by the screening of Forever You, a musical directed by Marco Danieli, at 8pm.
After opening night, all of the other 25 screenings will take place at Cinema Oasis on Sukhumvit 43, for 10 consecutive evenings starting from Friday.
The selection alternates movies from well-known directors and screenwriters, from Mario Martone's period piece Capri-Revolution to Alice Rhorwacher's magical-realist drama Happy As Lazzaro and Matteo Rovere's take on the Roman founding myth Romolus & Remus: The First King directed by Matteo Rovere.

The festival also showcases debut feature films by four talented young filmmakers: The Strange Sound Of Happiness, an Italian-German documentary by Diego Pascal Panarello; Travelling With Adele, a comedy by Alessandro Capitani; We'll Be Young And Beautiful, a comedy by Letizia Lamartire; and There Is A Light, a drama by Fabio Mollo.
The final two movies brought to delight Bangkok audiences are Wherever You Are, a drama by Bonifacio Angius, and The Startup, a comedy by Alessandro D'Alatri.
All films are in Italian with English subtitles, except Forever You, which also has Thai subtitles. Tickets cost 160 baht (no entry fee for the opening film at Scala Theatre).
