Cinema Day 2019 events around Northern Ireland - this is what's happening

There's a host of quirky screenings happening across Northern Ireland for this year's Cinema Day.

The 4th Cinema Day, presented by Film Hub NI (part of the BFI Film Audience Network) , will take place on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26, with 26 venues and film organisations hosting screenings, activities and other movie-related events all at £4 or under – and often free.

The theme of Cinema Day 2019 is Youth, with a whirlwind day of film events covering, wild youth, lost youth, feral youth, youth regained and youth remembered.

Hugh Odling-Smee, Project Manager at Film Hub NI , said: "We’re always impressed by the energy and diversity of Film Hub NI members and their response to Cinema Day. In our fourth year, the range and breadth of the films on offer show the exceptional passion of our members to bring the best of film to their audiences."

Screenings include family favourites such as the Tom Hanks classic Big in Ballymena (Into Film), Honey I Shrunk the Kids in the Ulster Museum (Cinemagic), The Incredibles in Newtownards, The Greatest Showman at Movie House Cinemas, and Drop Dead Fred (in a double bill with Picture of Dorian Gray) in the Black Box, Belfast.

There are also teen/coming of age classics such as Stand by Me (Derry Nerve Centre), Carrie and Heathers in The Strand, Belfast, Rebel without a Cause at the QFT, and what cinematic celebration of Youth would be complete without West Side Story (NI Film Foundation at Carnegie Oldpark).

Other highlights include NI Science Festival screening The Iron Giant followed by a robotics workshop, Where the Wild Things are at The Seamus Heaney Homeplace followed by special workshops for kids.

Northern Ireland Screen dig into the Digital Film Archive for In My Youth: Stories from the Digital Film Archive, meanwhile HMS Caroline (where else) will play host to a screening of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl.
