Location

Situated in the Cornish town of Falmouth, The Phoenix is a vibrant venue for both locals and the large student population. The cinema is a short stride from the market square, past a conveniently placed milkshake and doughnut shop.

The building

A historic frame with a regenerated interior is visible when first approaching the entrance. Downstairs there's a typical popcorn and confectionery section, while upstairs is an American-style jazzy diner alongside a licensed bar. The luxury screening rooms have waited service of food and beverages, and the viewer has the choice of extremely roomy seats or comfy couches for couples.

The clientele

This is a universal cinema for families, couples and students – and film fanatics who enjoy midnight screenings or movie marathons are accommodated occasionally.

The programme

Mainstream showings take priority and most new films are shown promptly after release. Theatre features heavily in their alternative shows, such as live screenings from the National Theatre, allowing the Cornish to feel slightly closer to the capital.

Further comments

This cinema is the largest in the Merlin Cinema group. It offers well priced, decent quality food, and an environment that is child-friendly while also allowing an adult to relax with a drink. In 2010 The Phoenix was granted the RAAM Award for the UK Independent Cinema of the Year.
