May 06--Disney reported Wednesday that its live-action fairy tale "Cinderella" has danced its way past $500 million at the worldwide box office.
To date, the film has pulled in almost $195 million in the U.S. and Canada, making it the third-highest-grossing film of the year after "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Furious 7." Its international gross is more than $308 million.
Overseas, it played especially well in China, where it opened with $25 million and went on to make $71.1 million. It also performed well in Britain ($29.2 million), Japan ($21.6 million), Italy and Australia ($16.5 million each), Brazil ($15.5 million) and Mexico ($15.4 million).
Directed by Kenneth Branagh, "Cinderella" brings back the classic fairy tale with Lily James ("Downton Abbey") in the title role. After Cinderella's father dies, her stepmother (Cate Blanchett) treats her like a servant, and a fairy godmother (Helena Bonham Carter) steps in to help change her luck and get her to the royal ball, where Prince Charming (Richard Madden) awaits.
The film, which cost $95 million to make, enchanted most moviegoers and earned an A grade from audience polling firm CinemaScore. It received an 84% positive rating from Rotten Tomatoes. It's remained in the top 10 at the domestic box office since its release in mid-March.
