The Australian Ballet’s 2016 season begins with an encore performance of Alexei Ratmansky’s Cinderella in Brisbane. The Russian choreographer has imbued the ballet, a staple in the company’s repertoire, with delightful lightheartedness. Set to Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet score, the rags–to–riches story comes to life in a glamorous 1940s world.
In classic Ratmansky style, the story is shaken up a little: Cinderella is taken to the ball by the planets, and the women there dance in pant-suits. The sets and costumes, designed by Jérôme Kaplan and inspired by Dior, Schiaparelli and surrealist art, enhance the ballet’s sense of indulgence and ridiculousness.
