Cinco de Mayo in Glasgow: Where to find the best Mexican food in the city

Grab the tequila, it’s time to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

And while the weather here might not be quite as calor as Mexico, where the celebration originates, there’s still plenty of reasons to enjoy a fiesta in Glasgow today.

Marking Mexico’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5 1862, the national holiday has since evolved into a global party celebrating the very best of Mexican culture.

And Glasgow is going all out to enjoy the occasion, from Mexican pop-ups to well established favourites, there are lots of ways to get in on the fiesta.

Whether you are margarita mad or have a taste for tequila and tacos, these are the best spots to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the city.

The Bungo

Drinking tequila on a Thursday isn't for everyone. So thank goodness, then, that The Bungo have pushed their Cinco de Mayo fiesta to Friday so we can enjoy the party until the wee small hours.

Celebrating Cinco de Mayo, the southside favourite is will be offering up limited editon margaritas, Mexican beers and tequila shots galore for one night only.

Expect piñatas, DJs, sobreros and more - you may need to block Saturday out for a day-long siesta to recover from this one.

Tickets are £7.50 and include one margarita on arrival. You can get yours here.

The Luchador

Located on Pollokshaws Road on the site of the former Grays Kitchen, the 'Luchy' is the second place opened up by the team behind behind Dundee's all-American dive bar, Abandon Ship.

Inspired by all things Lucha Libre, The Luchador serves up craft beers, cocktails, tacos and Mexican dishes with a Scottish twist. Olé!

Mezcal

Good news if you pining for Mexican food in the city centre. Mezcal offer some of the best dishes around in a cracking location beside Central Station - so you can ditch the car and let the tequila flow.

The restaurant on 104 Hope Street serves up Mexican-inspired street food and margaritas all year round - but we're betting there will be an extra kick to their salsa this Cinco de Mayo.

Named after the popular Mexican alcohol made from Agave, this place has been on our radar for a couple years now and we can't recommend their tacos and tequila selection enough.

Rafas

Serving up Arizona-style Mexican cuisine in the Hidden Lane off Argyle Street, Rafas' menu is stuffed with the best in Mexican gastronomy based around three main options. Tuck into tacos, burritos and plates - and be sure to save room for extras such as quesadillas, nachos, beans and fries

The taco and burrito options include carnitas (pork), carne asada (skirt steak) and fish (fried tecate) and relleno (cheese stuffed chile) - with vegan substitutions available for most dishes.

Sides of avocado, mash, rice, cheese and coleslaw are also on the menu - but you'll need to be quick. Rafas is walk in only so you will have to get there pronto to secure a table.

Bibi's Cantina

The Partick restaurant is known for its margaritas and a menu packed full of tacos, fajitas and everything in between.

For some it's the best Mexican restaurant in the city and is known as being budget-friendly, having a great atmosphere, but most importantly, it's renowned for having flavour-packed Mexican street food.

By all accounts, their quesadillas are not to be missed out on.
