Cinco de Mayo: How to add some Mexican style to your Sunday brunch

Cinco de Mayo is often mistaken for Mexican Independence Day, however the holiday is actually a celebration of a failed French invasion in 1862 after a fledgling Mexican state defaulted on debt payments to European governments. The Mexican victory occurred on Cinco de Mayo – or, 5th of May.

Today, it has become a celebration of Mexican culture with revellers marking the occasion with parades, parties, music, folk dancing, traditional foods, and of course, tequila.

This year, as the celebration falls on a Sunday, Jose Cuervo’s Tequila Educator, Oli Pergl, suggests making the most of Ireland’s favourite meal, brunch, but with a Jose Cuervo twist... So here are two tasty recipes to spice up your Sunday brunch.

Instead of hitting up your usual Sunday brunch spot, indulge friends or family with a home cooked authentic Mexican banquet.  Jose Cuervo has teamed up with Lily Ramirez-Foran, Picado Mexican to share a traditional Mexican dish that you can make at home, Huevos Rancheros with fresh eggs, tortilla and jalapeño.

Huevos Rancheros - a Mexican staple (Jose Cuervo)

Lily says  “Huevos Rancheros are a typical Mexican brunch. They’re delicious and super easy to make; I make them for the weekend and love adding a little tequila to the sauce; we use Cuervo Tradicional whenever we can as it adds a depth of flavour to the tomatoes and the hint of agave makes it a real treat!”

Get into the Cinco de Mayo spirit with some Mexican music. Look up a Spotify playlist and let the Latin-derived tunes inspire your festive spirit and set the tone for your traditional Mexican brunch.  Discover banda, ranchera and norteno music or shake it up with some Latin pop or rock to really get your brunch swinging.
