April 21--Perhaps a communication breakdown has something to do with the Cincinnati Reds losing seven of their last nine games. It certainly describes the deteriorating relationship Reds Manager Bryan Price has with some of the reporters who cover the team.
Price gave baseball it's first good managerial tirade of the season Monday, dropping a slew of expletives as he questioned why reporters keep asking about player movements on his team.
Price was upset with reports regarding catcher Devin Mesoraco not being in St. Louis for the Reds' series finale with the Cardinals on Sunday, believing the information gave the Cardinals an unfair advantage. He also took issue with a Cincinnati Enquirer story stating catcher Tucker Barnhart was about to join the team before the Reds were able to tell catcher Kyle Skipworth he would be sent to the minors.
Enquirer reporter C. Trent Rosecrans wrote that Price dropped 77 F-bombs and used a vulgar word for feces 11 times in a 5-minute, 34-second outburst.
Price apologized Tuesday for his choice of words but stood behind the message he was trying to convey to reporters.
"In my pre-game conversation with reporters yesterday, I used wholly inappropriate language to describe the media coverage of our team," Price said in a statement posted to Twitter. "While I stand by the content of my message, I am sorry for the choice of words."
Price is known for his calm temperament, making Monday's profanity-laced diatribe even more remarkable. Perhaps the second-year manager is frustrated by team's 6-7 start.
