When the Cincinnati Bengals unveil their redesigned uniforms this offseason, the same iconic helmet will remain as a staple of the franchise.
The Bengals announced Thursday that the team will unveil redesigned uniforms. In a long-form piece from Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, team president Mike Brown confirmed the helmet isn’t going anywhere.
Brown talked about the inspiration for the striped design:
“My father said he wanted a helmet that would take just one look to recognize us from the top seat in the stadium/ I think our helmet has stood the test of time. It has established our identity, our trademark, if you will, and that’s important to our fans.”
There wasn’t a realistic shot of the Bengals changing up the helmet alongside the jerseys. Based on the popularity of the “Color Rush” alternatives the team wears, the jerseys themselves figure to undergo smaller, modern changes.
Bengals equipment manager Adam Knollman noted the helmet’s reputation inside the NFL itself, per Hobson:
“I can’t tell you how may visiting locker rooms we go into and how many guys in there open up the bags and pull out the helmets and say something like, ‘This was my favorite helmet growing up,’ or ‘This is why I started rooting for the Bengals.'”
Helmet speculation, at least, is now over. It’s a layup of a move to keep the striped design fans like, as was deciding to do a jersey overhaul around the new era with Joe Burrow under center.
