Cillian Murphy's Tommy Shelby seen at 'prison' as he films Peaky Blinders final season

The cast of Peaky Blinders are hard at work filming series six after Covid-19 chaos sparked delays.

Cameras were rolling when the TV cast descended on Portsoy Harbour, in Aberdeenshire to film the final series this week. Portsoy Harbour appeared to be transformed into an American prison, for the scenes.

Excitement was in the air as Cillian Murphy, 44, stepped into the character Tommy Shelby for the day of filming. Suited and booted as usual, Tommy seemed to have with him an important letter.

Peaky Blinders creator and writer Steven Knight has promised to give fans the "best series of all" in an encouraging update about filming starting in January.

“Peaky is back and with a bang,” he wrote.

“After the enforced production delay due to the COVID pandemic, we find the family in extreme jeopardy and the stakes have never been higher.

"We believe this will be the best series of all and are sure that our amazing fans will love it. While the TV series will be coming to an end, the story will continue in another form.”

In series five, Tommy burst onto the scene of politics where he become swept up in fascism and the schemes of Sir Oswald Mosley (Sam Claflin).

What's more, Tommy is haunted by his dead wife and his visions drive him wild.

Elsewhere in the series, the Scottish gang known as the Billy Boys tried to take territory from the Shelby clan.

As the hype around series six builds, TV bosses urged fans to stay clear of the set amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

A production spokesman said: "We wish to thank the local community of Portsoy for their welcome and generosity as filming continues on Peaky Blinders season six.

"We once again ask that members of the public please stay away from our closed sets to keep everyone safe and well during this time."

It was predicted filming would wrap up in May/June time if filming went ahead in January.

TV bosses revealed the editing process for the show will take another six months.

Already Covid-19 has caused set backs and delays for Peaky Blinders.

Originally TV bosses wanted to start filming in March last year until July.

This fell through when the UK was placed into the first national lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Director Anthony Byrne previously told Digital Spy : "In an ideal world it would be great to be prepping again towards the end of the year [2020] with a view to start shooting early next year [2021].

"We were due to start filming at the end of March [2020] until the end of July. If we did start shooting in January, we wouldn't finish until May / June and then it's another six months of editing."

*Peaky Blinders season 6 will air on BBC One.
