Cilla Black died of a stroke, a post-mortem has concluded.

The singer and entertainer lost her balance after standing up on the terrace of her Spanish holiday home and fell hitting her head, knocking her unconcious. She subsequently died of a stroke, a statement from her publicist said, and would not have suffered.

Her three sons said they were "devastated" by the loss of their mother, but were "deeply touched" by the kind of messages of support from the media, the public, her fans and her many friends.

"We would like to thank everyone, especially the people of Liverpool," the statement continued. "The tributes and condolences have really helped us through these difficult times.

"The Spanish authorities have now told us we are able to bring Mum home, which we hope to do as quickly as possible. We would also like to thank all those involved for their assistance with this matter. We respectfully request for our continued privacy to grieve.”
