Ciclovia Belfast 2020 date will see pedal power reclaim the streets

Belfast traffic will make way for pedal power for one morning in March.

The free ciclovia Belfast event is designed to allow people to cycle freely through the normally hectic Belfast city centre, free of cars and buses, while promoting community cohesion, mental and physical wellbeing as well as being a fun event for everyone.

Family participation is encouraged at the event which also aims to encourage healthier lifestyles and engender community spirit.

This year's event will take place from 9.30am until 12noon on Sunday, March 29 and is open to all ages and abilities.

Free activities will also be offered at Belfast City Hall (9.30am-12pm) and Botanic Gardens from 9.30am-1pm).

Ciclovia, which means 'cycle freeway', originated in Bogota Colombia where a ciclovia takes place every Sunday.

Belfast has joined numerous cities around the world in staging their own version. Others include Tucson, Paris, Medellin, Gold Coast, Brussels, Halifax, Atlanta – while the list continues to grow.

It is hoped Belfast's involvement will help the city to become a leading city in terms of sustainability.

The event, which doesn't require registration, is supported by Department for Infrastructure, Belfast City Council, Public Health Agency, Linen Quarter Bid, PSNI, Translink, FORS, Sustrans and Road Services.

A spokesperson said: "The cycle freeway runs to and from the hubs at Botanic Gardens and Belfast City Hall – in no particular direction. A traffic free route will be created for people who between Botanic Gardens and City Hall, running along Botanic Avenue, Dublin Road and Bedford Street. Participants can start from wherever they wish on the route and ride up and down it in whichever direction, and as often as they wish."
