March 15--A woman and her 10-year-old goddaughter were critically injured when a car struck them while crossing Cermak Road in Cicero on Sunday afternoon.
Cicero police said the driver did not hesitate and sped away after striking the woman and the child. The accident occurred at 5:15 p.m. near 5500 W. Cermak Road after one vehicle stopped to let them pass. The suspect apparently quickly gunned his engine to speed up and pass some vehicles, authorities said.
The 44-year-old woman and the child remain in critical condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Chicago.
The vehicle involved is described as a silver, four-door car, which sustained damage to the front right and right side. The car is also missing the right headlight and passenger-side mirror, which were recovered by police at the scene.
The victims were able to provide a brief description of the suspect as male, heavy-set and bald with facial hair. Cicero police are hoping the public can help identify the driver and car.
"We are hoping that someone out there either saw this accident, videotaped it or may know someone who fits the description with a silver, four-door vehicle that has damage to the front-right side of the car and is missing both the front-right headlight and passenger-side mirror," said Cicero Police Chief Jerry Chlada Jr.
Chlada said anyone with information should contact the Cicero Police Department watch commander at 708-652-2130.
