Ciaran Clark’s classy farewell message to Newcastle supporters following Sheffield United move

Ciaran Clark has bid an emotional farewell to Newcastle United supporters on social media. A six-year stint on Tyneside came to an end on Wednesday when the defender completed a loan move to Sheffield United.

With one year left on his Magpies deal, the switch effectively ends his time at St James’ Park. Eddie Howe omitted Clark from his 25-man Premier League squad in February following Dan Burn’s arrival.

The 32-year-old was named player of the season in 2016-17 after securing promotion to the Premier League. Alongside Jamaal Lascelles, Clark forged a defensive partnership that helped stabilise United in the top flight.

Investment following the £300million Saudi-backed takeover, combined with Father Time, made offloading the likes of Clark inevitable as Newcastle aims to propel up the table. However, his efforts - especially during the Championship-winning campaign - means he will always be a respected figure on Tyneside.

Clark paid tribute to his “incredible” former club on social media while looking ahead to his time in Sheffield. “Newcastle - what an incredible club, city and set of fans,” he told Twitter.

“Proud to have worn the black and white. Wishing Eddie, the staff and my teammates the best of luck for this season and beyond - I look forward to the exciting years ahead for the club.

“Delighted to have joined Sheffield United for the season - great first session with the team today and can’t wait to get this season started.”
