Ciaran Clark gets deserved recognition after getting back in Newcastle United team

Ciaran Clark has been included in Ireland's final squad for the Boys in Green's games against New Zealand and Denmark after impressing Mick McCarthy with his form for Newcastle United .

The centre-back had to be patient to get his chance in the Premier League under Steve Bruce but has started the last four games, keeping Paul Dummett out of the side.

Clark has been solid at the back and even broke the deadlock in Newcastle's 3-2 win against West Ham when he headed the visitors in front at the London Stadium.

McCarthy, who previously spoke to Clark about the importance of his players getting game time, was among the 59,907 in attendance on Saturday and the Ireland boss has now included the defender in his final 28-man squad.

With Richard Keogh ruled out for 15 months after suffering a serious knee injury in a car crash, Clark looks set to come into the side for the friendly against New Zealand next Thursday before Ireland host Denmark in a crucial Euro 2020 qualifier four days later.

The 30-year-old joins Burnley winger Robbie Brady back in the squad and could win his 33rd cap at the Aviva Stadium following his first call-up since McCarthy took charge a year ago.

"I will give Robbie time against New Zealand to get ready for Denmark," the Ireland boss said. "He is one of the players in the squad who will really benefit from the New Zealand game before we play the Danes.

"Ciaran is in the same boat. He had to get back with Newcastle before he could back with us but he is playing well for them now and I was impressed with him against West Ham last Saturday."
