Ciaran Clark 'did his chances no harm' admits Mick McCarthy as defender looks to secure ROI place

Republic of Ireland Manager Mick McCarthy has praised Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark after his performance against West Ham at the weekend.

The Republic of Ireland defender is looking to make his first appearance for the national side since McCarthy took charge last year.

Speaking to the Republic of Ireland official website ahead of their friendly with New Zealand and their Euro 2020 qualifier against Denmark, McCarthy expressed his growing admiration for the experienced defender.

" Ciaran Clark did his chances no harm as well on Saturday,' Said the Ireland boss.

"His goal was one of the highlights for Newcastle but he played well throughout the game and looked settled in their defence."

This will come as a boost for Clark who has started the last four games for his club and opened the scoring in East London on Saturday.

The Magpies defender spoke about his involvement for his country and believes the more chances he gets at club level the more chances he will get on the international stage.

"I haven't been involved for quite a while now, but I think that's due to the fact that I didn't have much game time," Clark said earlier this month.

"Obviously it is a big period coming up and the next international is really important but I'm just focused on Newcastle at the minute and then we'll see what happens."
