Ciaran Clark a doubt for Newcastle as partner prepares to give birth

Republic of Ireland defender Ciaran Clark could miss out on Newcastle's game against Southampton this weekend as he prepares to become a father.

Ahead of tomorrow afternoon's Premier League clash, Clark's partner has gone into labour.

However, despite leaving his teammates to be by her side, Newcastle manager Steve Bruce remains hopeful that he can return in time after the baby is born.

"Ciaran Clark's partner has gone into labour but we’re hoping he’ll still make it," Bruce said today.

"We hope she produces a healthy baby this morning or this afternoon so he can get himself ready for the game."

The 31-year-old has been a regular under Bruce, and recently signed a contract extension to keep him at the club until 2023.

Clark's potential absence further opens a gaping hole in his side's defence as Bruce also has to contend with four injury concerns ahead of the game.

Jamal Lewis has suffered with a hamstring injury while Fede Fernandez still isn't fully fit after battling Covid-19.

Jamaal Lascelles (hamstring) is still struggling while Paul Dummett is also a doubt.
