Ciara Mageean explains how she uses social media to her advantage

What caught the eye after Ciara Mageean's disappointing run in Stockholm on Sunday evening was that she was quickly onto Twitter afterwards, thanking someone for their words of encouragement.

There are plenty of Irish sports people who don't engage on social media any more, having suffered from reading instant criticism of performances.

"Look, it's a double-edged sword," said Mageean. "I see huge benefit in it for us as sports people, and people as a whole - I think it's a fantastic tool to educate one another.

"I certainly learn a lot about fellow sports people through social media, that's one of the main reasons that I'm on it. I really love staying up to date with many of my fellow Irish counterparts there.

"I really enjoy seeing how their lives are going, seeing how their sport is going, and I really enjoy my social media just as a little break as well from my sport."

Mageean says that anyone looking at his Instagram account will see that she follows a lot of sports people but not athletes, and will realise she loves gardening and animals.

"I find it as a place to escape as well," added the 28-year-old. "

And I think it's important to manage that.  It's something that I'm very conscious of and don't get me wrong, I'll mute certain areas coming up to a race because I don't need to be reminded that people are constantly watching me or what a counterpart may be doing.

"I'm not fussed with that, I'm only worried about my build-up. Obviously there could be criticism on social media, that's another side of it as well.

"But I always try to find the positives in life and I've had so many positive messages coming through on my Instagram and Twitter.

"People have been so supportive through my fantastic races, and on Sunday I had lovely messages from people being like, 'Head up, we know you're a world-class athlete and you'll bounce back from this'.

"Those little things can really mean a lot, especially whenever you feel a bit low.

"So yeah, it's difficult, everyone manages social media in their own personal way.

"I use it to my advantage and I try to silence any parts I don't like about it, and that suits me how I approach it".
