Ciara Mageean has become the first Irishwoman to break the 2 minute mark for the 800m.
Running in Switzerland, the Portaferry athlete won her final in a time of 1:59.69, beating Norway's Hyenna Hedda.
Her previous best of 2:00.79 was set in 2016 Mageean's time was faster than that of Rose-Anne Galligan, who set the record Irish time of 2:00.58 seven years ago.
Mageean, 28, said last week that she has never been in better shape.
"Ironically, I’m as fit as I’ve ever been," said the 28-year-old.
"I’m so much fitter and stronger and in a really good mental place, so I’m very upset that I can’t get an Irish vest on and go out and race for Ireland."
Her achievement in Bern was praised by Sonia O'Sullivan, who tweeted her congratulations, saying: "2020 is a year to back yourself and just go for it".
Mageean had finished 10th in the World Championships in Doha last October in the 1500m and, before the lockdown, broke her own Irish indoor 1,500m and 3,000m records.
