Cian O'Neill steps down as Kildare manager after four years

Cian O'Neill has stepped away after four years managing Kildare's senior football team.

The former Moorefield player told county board officials of his decision on Monday evening.

O'Neill led the Lilywhites to back-to-back promotions to Division 1 in his opening two seasons in charge after replacing Jason Ryan.

The Newbridge native also guided Kildare to the 2017 Leinster final where they were lost 2-23 to 1-17 to Dublin.

But they have endured a disappointing season this year that ended in a comprehensive defeat to Tyrone in round three of the qualifiers.

This followed another Dublin hiding in the Leinster Championship and failure to gain promotion back to Division 1.

In a statement released through Kildare GAA, O'Neill said: “As a proud Kildare man, it was an honour and privilege to have been given the opportunity to work with an exceptional group of players, each one of us doing our best to represent our clubs and county with distinction at all times.

"Unfortunately, the successes of consecutive promotions from Division 3 to Division 1, a 1 Leinster Final in 8 years and progression to the Super 8’s in 2018 was met with equal disappointment across these 4 years where frustratingly we didn’t always reach our potential as a group.

"As Manager, this is my greatest regret and ultimately my responsibility, and this undoubtedly informed my decision to step away from this role. This will hopefully leave time and space for my successor and the chosen group of players to take the challenge to a new level under a new direction."

O'Neill works as the head of the Department of Sport, Leisure and Childhood in the Cork Institute of Technology.

He added: "After 4 years of travelling from Cork to Kildare 3-4 times a week, and with it a level of commitment and selfishness that means other aspects of life undoubtedly suffer, it’s time to hand the baton over.

"Thanks for everything men – Cill Dara Abú.”

O'Neill biggest moment in the Kildare hotseat was arguably a qualifier win over Mayo in Newbridge last year.

This came following a ‘Newbrigde or nowhere’ campaign that got national headlines and saw the GAA reverse their original decision to order the game to be played elsewhere.

County chairman Ger Donnelly said that he "expressed his sincere gratitude to Cian on behalf of Kildare GAA and we wish him and his family all the best in their future endeavors."
