Chvrches: The Bones of What You Believe – review

Chvrches' every flinch has received unprecedented online coverage since their appearance in the BBC Sound of 2013 poll in January: each remix, gig, live session, thought or movement retweeted, blogged and shared as if it were a twerk-off between Miley Cyrus and Samantha Brick. Thankfully for the synthpop trio, their debut is immediate enough that it should hold the skittish interests of the online community, and its opening gambit – The Mother We Share, We Sink, Gun – is an almightily bombastic introduction. At times, their leanings towards more leftfield electro suggest they'd rather be part of fellow Glaswegian's LuckyMe crew, but what with Lauren Mayberry's vocals – which are sometimes so precious she sounds like a precocious 13-year-old – and some super-sized, emo-aping melodies, Chvrches music will always be too bathetic for a grotty warehouse rave. Until 2014's buzz-band polls, it looks like they'll reign supreme as internet overlords.
