Chvrches – Gun (Jamie Isaac Remix): New music

The highlight of this year's music industry jolly SXSW – where they won the inaugural Grulke Prize for best international new act – Glasgow-based trio Chvrches have created quite the buzz online. Previous singles Recover and The Mother We Share saw them top things like the Hype Machine chart and various other important lists that count towards a satisfying online portfolio. Having signed their own label Goodbye Records to Virgin, however, there's the sense that all this chatter needs to be converted into actual tangible record sales. Thankfully current single Gun – all fragmented synths, rapid-fire beats and more hooks per minute than most other pop singles – has given them a pretty good chance of making the leap from online clickbait to daytime radio staples. Of course they also need to keep fans of stripped-back and melancholic remixes happy, which is why they turned to Croydon-born 18-year-old producer and songwriter Jamie Isaac, who strips the song back to its bare bones (the central beat is augmented by simple handclaps), adds in his own backing vocals, tweaks everything to make it seem oddly sinister and just lets it all simmer gently.

Gun is out on 15 July.
