Churchill's grandson close to tears as he condemns 'disloyal' Boris Johnson

Sir Nicholas Soames, the grandson of Winston Churchill, condemned 'disloyal' Boris Johnson in an emotional speech after being ousted as a Tory MP.

The Tory grandee, a Tory MP for 37 years, had the whip withdrawn last night after he rebelled on a crunch Brexit vote.

He said his intention was not to block Brexit - opening his speech with a barbed joke at Johnson's expense.

He said: "I want to make clear that I have always believed that the referendum result must be honoured, and indeed I have voted for the withdrawal agreement on every occasion that it has been presented to the house.

"Which is more than can be said for my right-honourable friend the Prime Minister, the Leader of the House and other members of the Cabinet whose serial disloyalty has been an inspiration for so many of us."

Sir Nicholas appeared close to tears as he told fellow MPs: "I am not standing at the next election and I am thus approaching the end of 37 years' service to this House, of which I have been proud and am honoured beyond words to have been a member."

Sir Nicholas added: "I am truly very sad that it should end in this way."

He continued: "I hope this House can rediscover the spirit of compromise, humility and understanding that will enable us finally to push ahead with the vital work in the interest of the whole country which has inevitably had to be so sadly neglected whilst we get on with Brexit."

Intervening on Sir Nicholas' speech, former Conservative MP Sir Oliver Letwin said: "I believe I speak on behalf of the House when I say that will be a great loss to our party."

Earlier, former minister Alastair Burt lashed out a Tory ‘purge’ that saw him and 20 of his colleagues sensationally sacked from the Conservative whip last night.

Mr Burt said: "I rise to speak as the proud but slightly bemused member for north east Bedfordshire."

Speaking in support of Hilary Benn's bill to delay Brexit by three months, he said it was not a stumbling block to negotiations with the EU.

After slapping down Eurosceptic Bill Cash MP he lashed out at the direction of the Tory party: "I don't complain about the removal of the whip voting on an issue of confidence, I accept the rules.

"But to my colleagues here just think about how this looks...."

He mentioned how, in the last week, the Tory party has lost Ruth Davidson as Scottish leader, George Young, who resigned as a government whip in the Lords, and Philip Hammond, who had the whip removed last night.

"What are people going to think about what we have left and what we have lost?" he asked.

"Some will have been very happy at the fact that some have been purged,  purged.

"A few weeks ago one of our colleagues retweeted an article in the Daily Telegraph that looked forward to the purging of remainers in the Conservative Party.

"That was disgraceful.

"And I say to my colleagues if we are being purged now, who's next?

"Watch a film called Good Night and Good Luck and you may see my point...

"I will walk out of here looking up at the sky and not down at my shoes."
