Church 'struck by lightning' as thunderstorms hit Merseyside

A church was reportedly struck by lightning as thunderstorms hit Merseyside.

Photos show the damage caused to the spire on top of St Gregory's R.C. Church on Damson Road in Netherley on Saturday, June 10. Ian, who captured the photo, told the ECHO he heard the sound of the lightning strike shortly before 9pm which "was like an explosion."

He added: "It was very loud but we didn't get any shockwave."

An amber weather warning for thunderstorms was issued for Merseyside until 9pm on Saturday as the region was battered by torrential rain. Photos showed lightning lighting up the sky above the Liver Building and on Otterspool Promenade.

A yellow weather warning has also been issued for Merseyside from midday on Sunday until 9pm. The Met Office said: "While some places will be largely dry, thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail are likely to develop in places on Sunday afternoon."

  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
