The suspects, who are believed to have been travelling in a white, high-top long wheelbase Ford Transit van, stole the York Stone from outside Ormskirk Parish Church.

Ormskirk and Rural West Lancs Police are appealing for witnesses.

These are some of the reactions after the story ran yesterday (Wednesday).

Gary Mussell said: "I've known some horrible people in my time but not one of them would stoop that low.

"That's really scraping the bottom of the barrel."

Margaret Callan said: "Omg. What is wrong with people?"

Ryan Roberts said: "That's the lowest of the low."

Diane said: "There will always be people who put more effort into stealing from others than going to work and earning their own way. We have to have cctv everywhere."

Imadeus said: "Sometimes areas become havens for law breakers, because law breakers get away with it. Eventually people being affected will see the light and become more observant and willing to keep police updated. I hope the culprits are found, caught and prosecuted, sooner rather than later!"

Anthony McMahon said: "I just hope that if these stones have been stolen to order, then the final recipient has the honesty to contact the police if they suspect there is the possibility that the stones supplied to them are from one of these recent robberies. Not much of a hope though."

Scouse8u said: "Nothing is sacred to the lowest form of life in this world."
