Church starts Sunday afternoon service so worshippers can recover from hangovers

A reverend is set to go head-to-head with the Premier League every Sunday in a novel bid to make life easier for worshippers.

Rev Mark Montgomery has announced his 'morning' services will move to 4pm on Sundays - although this means there will be a clash with televised football.

This, he says, will give his flock time to recover from hangovers, allow them to visit farmers markets and take their kids to sporting events.

The reverend, of St Gabriel's in Kings Hill, Kent, made the decision after questioning churchgoers about why couldn't attend.

Among the answers he got was that people often struggle after a heavy night.

He told Kent Online : "This is something we've been looking at for a while but we've only just found the right location so feel now is the right time to announce it.

"The idea is not an unusual occurrence - even though historically church services are in the mornings and evenings, there are quite a few churches that run 4pm services.

"Society has changed and Sunday mornings are not always the best time for people for various reasons."

Graham Lawson, 45, told the Daily Mail : "At last someone with a bit of sense.

"Getting up to go to church when you have a raging hangover is no fun at all - the only problem is that it will clash with the football now."
