Church of England leads nation in prayer for victims of Avonmouth blast

The Church of England is leading the nation’s prayers for victims of the Avonmouth explosion.

The prayer comes after the blast at Wessex Water’s Bristol water treatment works killed four people and injured one yesterday (December 4) morning.

A statement posted to the Church of England Twitter page said: “We join together to pray for the people of Avonmouth. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.”

The full prayer read: “God our refuge and strength, close at hand in our distress; we raise to you the people of Avonmouth, especially those who are grieving and those who are dealing with the incident.

“Meet us in sorrow and lift our eyes to the peace and light of your constant care, for the sake of your son, Jesus Christ. Amen.”

The blast on Kings Weston Lane was in a silo that holds treated biosolids.

The workers, three employees of Wessex Water and one contractor, were on top of the chemical tank when the blast went off.

Firefighters from six different fire stations were called at 11.22am and police declared the explosion a major incident.

Tributes have been pouring in for the workers, with the Prime Minister saying he was "deeply saddened" at the news four people had died and Bristol Mayor Marvin Rees saying we will mourn their deaths as a city.

Residents were told to avoid the area, while Wessex Water reassured people the incident would not impact water supply.

Investigations into the explosion are ongoing.
