Regarding the Church of England being advised to boost its fund to address the legacy of slavery to £1bn (Report, 4 March), as far back as the 1960s, Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of an independent Kenya, noted: “When the missionaries arrived, the Africans had the land and the missionaries had the Bible. They taught how to pray with our eyes closed. When we opened them, they had the land and we had the Bible.” What took the C of E so long to recognise its place in British imperial theft, slavery and slaughter?
