Church leaders need your help to reduce knife crime in Leeds

Church leaders need help to reduce knife crime in Chapeltown and Harehills.

They are appealing for donations to pay for the installation of two 'weapons bins' where knifes can be disposed of anonymously.

Leaders of Chapeltown and Harehills Churches Together (CHCT) say they have launched the fundraising because their congregations are 'often directly affected' by such violence.

The bins, which are on the streets of Sheffield, Birmingham and London, cost £4,000 to construct, install and maintain for a year.

Reverend Nicholas, from CHCT, said: "Like everyone else in the country, the members of Christian churches in Chapeltown and Harehills have been deeply saddened and worried at the tragic loss of young lives to violent crime in the streets of Leeds.

"Knife crime has risen in Leeds by 32 per cent in the last few years, with the highest peaks in the LS7 and LS8 areas.

"Our congregations are often directly affected by such violence and we feel it is time to go beyond the daily pastoral care of victims and their families; these bins are a vital step forward."

Donations can be made on CHCT's JustGiving page.

West Yorkshire Police was recently given £4m government funding to tackle rising levels of violence as it is one of 18 police forces dealing with the highest rates of violent crime.
