Church in Soundwell up for sale and could be turned into home

A former church will go up for sale today, with bids starting at £200,000. The Soundwell Spiritualist National Church measures 1,050 sq ft, offering buyers ample “potential for alternative uses”.

The Spiritualist National Union church on Soundwell Road, Soundwell was closed just three months ago, when no committee could be formed to oversee its continued operation. It has since been listed on Rightmove, with sealed bids to be accepted on 17 August.

The building is described as “a detached single storey property” with “an entrance porch which opens out into a large, open-plan nave with good high floor to ceiling height”. It also features a “kitchen area with disabled WC and additional WCs”.

The church currently offers no accommodation, but could easily become a unique family home, subject to obtaining planning permission for redevelopment. And the freehold of the property is available, meaning no ground rent to pay.

The building’s location is described as “a residential suburb on the north eastern outskirts of Bristol”. It allows convenient access to the city centre via the A434 Fishponds Road, which also provides a quick route to Junction 2 of the M32, Eastville.

What’s more, Staple Hill High Street – with its “abundance of shops, restaurants, banks and building societies (an increasingly rare feature of high streets)” – is located only a short distance away.

The former church will be sold by estate agents Burston Cook via the processes of sealed bids, in which potential buyers submit secret offers and the owner chooses the most attractive one – which may not necessarily be the highest.

For more information, see the agent’s online brochure for the property.
