Church dispute only serves vested interests: Kerala HC

KOCHI: The dispute between the two factions of Malankara church only serves those with vested interests, the high court said on Tuesday.

Considering petitions seeking police protection, Justice Devan Ramachandran said the dispute does not seem to be protect the interests of believers.

The court said it does not derive any happiness in sending police to churches and is being seen as the last resort. However, if there is no other way to implement the Supreme Court’s judgment, it will be done as it is a constitutional duty, the court said.

Further, the court said the believers from both the factions should realize that the path of legal fight has ended with the Supreme Court’s judgment. The stance taken by the factions in court gives hope to the court and the wise among the parties should discuss and decide on ending the dispute, is added.

During the earlier hearing, the court had criticized the state government for allowing continuation of the dispute and had asked the leaders of both Orthodox and Jacobite factions to try for an amicable settlement.

Though the government had expressed helplessness in implementing the apex court’s judgment, the court had declined to agree and had said that the onus is on the government to implement the verdict. The court will hear the case again on October 26.
