Chunnel traffic tails off in May as Brexit doubts deal blow to imports

Truck and tourist traffic through the Chunnel fell sharply last month in the latest sign political uncertainty is affecting economic activity.

Though the 7% fall in passenger vehicles compared with last May could be because of the late Easter holiday, the 11% fall in trucks seems to be driven by business caution.

Companies which stocked up in the first quarter of the year to prepare for leaving the EU on March 29 are now destocking.

A sharp decline in car production in April contributed to the lower traffic across the Channel.

The figures come from Getlink, previously known as Groupe Eurotunnel, which operates the Channel Tunnel between England and France.

Getlink shares, listed on Euronext, were steady at €13.9 (1240p).

Since January 1, more than 930,000 passenger vehicles have crossed the Channel.

Nearly 690,000 trucks have made the same journey
