Chunk ripped off double-decker bus after it ploughed into bridge in Middleton

A chunk was ripped off a double-decker bus after it ploughed into a bridge.

The Stagecoach bus smashed into the low railway bridge as it travelled along Joshua Lane, in Middleton, on Monday night.

A spokesman for Stagecoach confirmed it was not in service in the time.

There are no reports of any injuries.

Images shared on social media show a corner of the bus missing.

The front windscreen on the top floor appears to be completely damaged.

Eyewitness Allan Roach said: "I heard it and got caught in the tailback, so I investigated.

"Police attended closed the road and I believe it was protocol to suspend rail services until cleared by Network Rail.

Joshua Lane has since reopened.

A spokesman for Stagecoach Manchester said: "We can confirm one of our buses was involved in an incident at 6.51pm yesterday (February 10) on Joshua Lane in Middleton, Manchester.

"The bus was not in service and was not carrying any passengers at the time. There are no reported injuries and no other vehicles were involved.”
