Chulalongkorn suspends badminton coach for 'harassment'

Chulalongkorn University (CU) has suspended a contracted badminton instructor and launched an investigation into his conduct following a complaint of sexual harassment.

The university said the instructor was suspended on Wednesday after students lodged complaints that they had been sexually harassed. CU placed importance on the safety of its students, the university said in a statement, and urged other students who may have been affected to contact the Office of Student Affairs.

The name of the instructor was not disclosed. He was an outside contractor, not a member of staff.

The problem came to light in the wake of tweets about a female student being harassed by the instructor.

Thanawat Wongchai, the Student Council president of Chulalongkorn University, told Amarin TV on Tuesday that the harassment occurred during a badminton class on Sunday. The council decided to file the complaint after talking with the student, he added.

Mr Thanawat said about eight female students had been harassed by the same instructor.
