Chryston cycle library project receives grant boost

Residents in Chryston and Moodiesburn will be getting on their bikes thanks to a new community project which has received a new Scottish Government grant.

Northern Corridor community volunteers have received £5000 from the Scotland Loves Local fund for their new bike library, which will consist of eight adult hybrid bikes and will also have a worker in place to maintain the cycles and provide advice for those using them.

It was one of four awards made to North Lanarkshire projects through the £1 million scheme, aiming to “help communities recover from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic”.

The grants are being administered by Scotland’s Towns Partnership, which is promoting a campaign for people to “think local first”, helping businesses by relaxing, shopping and eating close to home, promoting and improving town centres and ensuring public safety.

Chief officer Phil Prentice said: “This funding will bring some brilliant projects to life, and each of these schemes will provide another reason for people to embrace local life.

“Whether in person or online, money that’s spent locally stays local for longer, and we hope these grants will be a great Christmas present to all those benefiting.”

Communities secretary Aileen Campbell added: “This fund will empower communities by supporting local projects to help our towns to recover from the impact of Covid-19; it’s a unique chance to improve towns and an opportunity to unlock some brilliant creativity.”
