We all know that unisex, androgyny-tinged dressing is the chic option – denim dungarees looked so much cooler than teeny dresses at Coachella, and trouser suits are beating tailored-dresses hands down at the office – but after 6pm, most of us still automatically feminise our look in the pursuit of looking dressed up. You might have been in sleek mannish separates all day, but when cocktail hour rolls around, dresses and heels, decorative colours and feminine fabrics reassert their hold over our wardrobes.

But, watch and learn, because androgyny after-hours is so hot. Witness: Christy Turlington-Burns and Phoebe Philo giving us a masterclass in the look. The event was a film screening in aid of Every Mother Counts, CT-B’s charity, which aims to “make pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother”. The short film “explores long-distance running as a metaphor for birth”, apparently, but never mind that right now, we need to cut to the style chase.

The point is, that for an evening celebrating female empowerment, both CT-B and Philo showcased awesomely non-girly looks. The 90s supermodel wore a loose denim jumpsuit by Citizens of Humanity, with no-nonsense lace-up polished black brogues, and no jewellery at all. Meanwhile, Philo wore a white shirt (one of the animal-motif numbers from AW15 if we’re not mistaken) under a grey trouser suit, with her trademark white trainers. (Extra points for the grey, camel and burgundy cardigan she’s holding. Man, the things we would do for Philo’s knitwear drawer.)

Stylist Cathy Kasterine, and event-hostess Laura Bailey, echoed the androgyny theme in camo and denim, respectively. Time to man up for evening, girls
