Christopher Plummer wins Oscar for best supporting actor

Christopher Plummer has won the Oscar for best supporting actor at the Academy Award ceremony currently taking place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Plummer's film Beginners was not up for any other awards, but Plummer was considered the favourite after winning both the Bafta and Golden Globe awards for best supporting actor.

Plummer saw off a strong field containing Max von Sydow, Jonah Hill, Nick Nolte and Kenneth Branagh. This is only the second time that Plummer has been nominated for an Oscar, after receiving another best supporting nod for The Last Station in 2010.

Beginners sees Plummer play a man who comes out as gay in his 70s, after the death of his wife. Also starring Ewan McGregor and Mélanie Laurent, Beginners was inspired by the real-life story of director Mike Mills' own father.
