Christopher Nkunku to Arsenal: The €15m deal that proves the Gunners were right to wait

Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Christopher Nkunku during the January transfer window.

But with no money available for signings, a deal could never be done.

Unai Emery has a limited budget with which to work this summer too, with just £45million at his disposal and the Spaniard is having to drive down prices for certain transfer targets.

The Gunners have often been accused of waiting too long to strike a deal in past windows, with transfer targets snapped up by other interested parties.

But with Nkunku it appears their hesitancy may have paid off.

The midfielder was being touted as a £25million signing during the winter window, but with only one year remaining on his current Paris Saint-Germain contract, that price has been dropped.

Arsenal were only dealing in loan moves in January, with flop Denis Suarez the only incoming transfer from Barcelona.

The Gunners presented an offer of a loan with a view to a permanent transfer to PSG for Nkunku, but it was rejected, and Arsenal were right to play the waiting game.

Nkunku wants to leave and reports in France say that PSG are willing to sell to raise funds this summer. But whereas a fee of around £25million was mooted when the two teams were talking in January, it appears PSG will happily listen to offers in the region of €15million for Nkunku now.

Arsenal have scouted the player on various occasions and remain keen on securing a deal, but would face competition from German side RB Leipzig to get a cut-price deal over the line.
